Or Colleen McCullough's 'Masters of Rome' series.

In non-fiction, Adrian Goldsworthy's 'The Complete Roman Army' is one of the best treatises you can find.
Or watch Rome, the bestest series ever.
Meaning lies as much
in the mind of the reader
as in the Haiku.

What should I watch if I want something Rome-y with a little less HBO/Hollywood influence?

No shit, I drew the conclusion that he responded to Xant who recommended the same series. I was trying to be funny, obviously it didn't work.

It would be funny if you wouldn't be so stupid and ruin the joke by pointing out the obvious.

If it's military history you are interested in, Osprey has published some decent handbooks in a very accessible format, for example 'Imperal Roman Legionary', 'The Roman Army of the Principate 27BC-AD117', 'Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan', 'Roman Republican Legionary 298-105BC'.

A treatise I found only recently and was very impressed with was 'Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier: From Marius to Commodus' by G. Sumner and Raffaele D'Amato, from 2009, which to me at least offered a lot of new insight.

All of these can easily be found online.

I'm listening to the History of Rome podcast by Mike Duncan, its decent, if dry, but i have lots of time to fill listening to worthless history podcasts while commuting.

If you've never listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcasts though, he does a series on the Punic Wars and the fall of the republic, and he is pretty much the best podcaster that exists. He turns events in history into rambling narratives with very good storytelling, making things feel more like gritty-drama with details of the day to day insanity of human nature in extraordinary circumstances. Also does epic multi part series on the Mongol invasions and Eastern Front of WW2, with many standalone episodes of other bizarre/interesting historical events.

Now he's gone full blown insane and spends months working on 5+ hour podcast episodes, currently spending nearly a year on WW1 and only in the middle (and it fucking owns)
