Doctor Who: Role was offered to black actor, says Steven Moffat

Quote
Moffat said the show had "no excuse" not to feature a more diverse cast, adding it would be "amazing" for it to have two non-white lead actors.

Quote
"We decided that the new companion was going to be non-white, and that was an absolute decision, because we need to do better on that. We just have to," Moffat said.

"I don't mean that we've done terribly - our guest casts are among the most diverse on television - but I feel as though I could have done better overall."

Quote
Earlier this year, Undercover became the first BBC One drama to feature two non-white actors, with Adrian Lester and Sophie Okonedo in the leading roles.

Moffat, who is also Doctor Who's lead writer, said he would be keen for his show to do the same thing.

"Two non-white leads would be amazing. In fact, a lot of people would barely notice," he said.

Quote
Moffat said the show must find new ways to get ethnic minority actors on screen in future.

"We've kind of got to tell a lie. We'll go back into history and there will be black people where, historically, there wouldn't have been, and we won't dwell on that.

"We'll say, 'To hell with it, this is the imaginary, better version of the world. By believing in it, we'll summon it forth'."

Interestingly, the superguns used by the Ottomans during the Fall of Constantinople were made by an engineer from Europe (most likely Hungarian or German) and the bombard technology itself was also European, mainly German.

Oh man have you read about the Symbionese Liberation Army? It's the ultimate in 60s-70s counterculture race war showdowns.

Check out Rote Armee Fraktion, their competent German counterpart: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Army_Faction

Quote
The Red Army Faction engaged in a series of bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, bank robberies and shoot-outs with police over the course of three decades. Their activity peaked in late 1977, which led to a national crisis that became known as the "German Autumn". The RAF has been held responsible for thirty-four deaths, including many secondary targets, such as chauffeurs and bodyguards, as well as many injuries throughout its almost thirty years of activity. Although better-known, the RAF conducted fewer attacks than the Revolutionary Cells, which is held responsible for 296 bomb attacks, arson and other attacks between 1973 and 1995.

World War II was only twenty years earlier. Those in charge of the police, the schools, the government — they were the same people who'd been in charge under Nazism. The chancellor, Kurt Georg Kiesinger, had been a Nazi. People started discussing this only in the 60's. We were the first generation since the war, and we were asking our parents questions. Due to the Nazi past, everything bad was compared to the Third Reich. If you heard about police brutality, that was said to be just like the SS. The moment you see your own country as the continuation of a fascist state, you give yourself permission to do almost anything against it. You see your action as the resistance that your parents did not put up.

The Baader-Meinhof Gang drew a measure of support that violent leftists in the United States, like the Weather Underground, never enjoyed. A poll at the time showed that a quarter of West Germans under forty felt sympathy for the gang and one-tenth said they would hide a gang member from the police. Prominent intellectuals spoke up for the gang's righteousness (as) Germany even into the 1970s was still a guilt-ridden society. When the gang started robbing banks, newscasts compared its members to Bonnie and Clyde. (Andreas) Baader, a charismatic action man indulged in the imagery, telling people that his favourite movies were Bonnie and Clyde, which had recently come out, and The Battle of Algiers. The pop poster of Che Guevara hung on his wall, (while) he paid a designer to make a Red Army Faction logo, a drawing of a machine gun against a red star.

I have, and no, it is an introductory course.

I recommend it, Kagan is one of the leading scholars in the field, particularly on Thucydides and The Peloponnesian War.

Yes, Victor Hanson is one of the more interesting American classicists, along with Donald Kagan. One of his major contributions is the current understanding of the development of the hoplite as a product of the new middleclass farmer family unit, the oikos, and its relevance to the emergence of the power structure of the polis, replacing the kings and palace culture of the Mycenaean Greeks.

Interesting tidbit about Donald Kagan is that he turned away from liberalism in 1969 when he witnessed Cornell University being pressured into starting a Black Studies program by gun-wielding black students seizing the student union building on campus: "Watching administrators demonstrate all the courage of Neville Chamberlain had a great impact on me, and I became much more conservative."

A few other good Victor Davis Hanson videos on politics and culture:

'How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of Race' by professor of genetics at Harvard David Reich https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/23/opinion/sunday/genetics-race.html

Quote
I have deep sympathy for the concern that genetic discoveries could be misused to justify racism. But as a geneticist I also know that it is simply no longer possible to ignore average genetic differences among “races.”

Groundbreaking advances in DNA sequencing technology have been made over the last two decades. These advances enable us to measure with exquisite accuracy what fraction of an individual’s genetic ancestry traces back to, say, West Africa 500 years ago — before the mixing in the Americas of the West African and European gene pools that were almost completely isolated for the last 70,000 years. With the help of these tools, we are learning that while race may be a social construct, differences in genetic ancestry that happen to correlate to many of today’s racial constructs are real.

Recent genetic studies have demonstrated differences across populations not just in the genetic determinants of simple traits such as skin color, but also in more complex traits like bodily dimensions and susceptibility to diseases. For example, we now know that genetic factors help explain why northern Europeans are taller on average than southern Europeans, why multiple sclerosis is more common in European-Americans than in African-Americans, and why the reverse is true for end-stage kidney disease.
