Strategus General Discussion / Strat ideas
« on: October 05, 2018, 08:14:45 PM »
I have some Strat ideas. Since the other threads are locked, I'm posting them here. Strategus Councillors, James, Prof, anyone, feel free to use/take-credit-for/modify any of these ideas if you like them, otherwise feel free to ignore. I'll try not to repeat any that were already mentioned in the Strategus Council thread, a lot of great ideas there.

Preamble:
Strategus is still somehow the closest thing we have to that dream-game we all wanted when Warband first came out, a multiplayer Warband Campaign. Despite years of neglect, and years more of well-wishing individuals caring for it but being unable to make substantial changes to the spaghetti-code, Strategus is still somehow the best thing in the market for this genre. Sometimes I wonder how awesome it could have been if Strategus had seen continuous development since it was first created, but it didn't. Personally I'm amazed people are still playing it in 2018, well done to everyone involved. I'm not making suggestions so much because I personally believe the mod can grow massively at this stage or last years into the future, but I do still hope that someday somewhere someone's going to attempt to make either a standalone game or a mod for Bannerlord (if Bannerlord ever happens) that tries to give us our Multiplayer Warband Campaign, and when they do I'd like to think they'd look to Strategus in it's final state for inspiration, to learn from the things that worked and the things that didn't.

Strategus Council:
I like the idea behind having a Strategus Council, and I think everyone on that Council wants what's best for the game and have some really good ideas. There are a couple of blind suggestions I'd like to make up front for if you want to get the best out of this group of players (nobody wants it to end up as a seldom-used chat group that 2 or 3 people visit and only use for sharing memes etc). I have no idea how you're currently running it or planning to run it, so these are very general and you may have done them already:

1. Discuss and make sure everyone on the Council agrees upfront on the system you'll be using for decision-making (basically whether or not you decide an idea is "good" before Prof/whoever decides whether or not it can be achieved). Eg. Do you all vote? Do key members have an ultimate veto? If everyone understands and agrees to your process in advance they're likely to be more engaged, and it's likely to avoid drama further down the line.

2. Make sure the Council understands up-front the technical limitations. If Councillors join with big ideas but all Prof had in mind was just tweaking a few values, those Councillors will probably lose interest. As long as they know the extent of change you're looking at, the ideas they suggest are more likely to be worthy of discussion. DAVEUKR in his application mentioned he can code, it might make sense to scope out the kinds of changes Prof can make alone and then have some "stretch target" for ideas/suggestions that could possibly be implemented if you can find more people with the relevant knowledge and desire to help out.

3. Not every idea needs a technical solution or code change. Don't forget that there are plenty of people in the community willing to do the boring shit manually if necessary to make Strategus better. I'm going to quote what is IMO the most under-appreciated post on the Strategus Council thread, by Knute:
Quote from: Knute
Maybe there's a way to do it with minimal effort that might work well with the Gamemaster™ concept.

We had a round that started with factions owning fiefs after voting. Using the same mechanic, give the Gamemasters control of all the fiefs and access to the map before the round starts. They're now the AI faction. They could move around the map and set the PP, gear, troop numbers etc in all the fiefs then control the AI rosters once the round starts. Fiefs could now have themes instead of random gear and roster issues
.

Of the ideas below most of them stand alone, but some ideas have some decent synergy and should work well together. I'll try to highlight those cases.

1. Villages gain troops

2. Strategus Exp/Levels/Skill-points

3. Strategus round Rewards:

5. Strategus exp - change it!!!

6. Make plate armour impossible to buy in bulk easily

7. FAQ and tooltips on Strategus map

Feel free to post below if you have any ideas of your own. Even with a Strategus Council I think the rest of us can continue to throw Strategus ideas out there, maybe some of them will be discussed or considered.

General Off Topic / Hey James you alright
« on: August 08, 2018, 09:10:07 AM »
How come you're being such a cunt? I'd rather discuss whatever issues you have on an open forum rather than ignore it on Discord.

You've got me worried, unlike your predecessor you don't have any technical skills or marketable talents on your own to prop the mod up. Please don't start being a cunt to Prof and the people you're dependent on k?

When people told me you've been increasingly unstable and I didn't really believe it, cos you being a bit of a cunt is nothing new (remember how petty you were when Arn and Kratos DARED to attack your virtual fiefs on a virtual map? And you were such a cunt/bully on the forum that Arn quit Strategus? I lose track of time, wasnt that only this year?). But yesterday and last week in Discord was borderline schitzophrenic from you lol. You alright buddy?

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I haven't said anything bad on Discord, and given the context of the random toxic spew from you I think i've been pretty chill in my responses. So what's with the sudden cuntiness as of last week? Wife left you? Puberty? Cos I sure didn't do anything wrong in the last week or so.

Let's let it all out here and discuss in open your rational and intelligent reasons for this behaviour. Everyone will understand.

Mercenary Recruitment / Send Acre packing! [EU Strategus]

Acre sieges Jammeyed Castle in EU!

http://c-rpg.net/index.php?page=strategusbattlesupcoming#!?page=strategusinfobattledetail&id=709

@EU - Will this Foreign Invasion be tolerated?

Faction leaders, has Reinhardt perhaps been courting you for roster support/trade/political alliance? You won't be surprised then to hear that the other factions have also been similarly courted.

EU won't be played for chumps! DESTROY the Invaders!!!!

@NA - I guess it's cool right?

A rival faction allies with IW on the EU map and gets free protected trade between EU and NA? That works.

And abandons NA to settle EU castles like some kinda Commie? Fair enough.

Oh, but I forgot to mention that REINHARDT IS A GAS KILLING ANIMAL! WHO KILLS HIS OWN PEOPLE FOR FUN!!! Well the missiles are coming, nice and new and "smart"

Strategus General Discussion / Cheers for ze roster
« on: August 06, 2018, 12:37:18 PM »
I wasn't about for the battle last yeldurht, cheers everyone who applied (for either side) I was surprised to see such a big roster in an EU Strat battle, sorry I missed it.

Hope it was a decent battle, I know I didn't really have gear for the number of troops I had. Was pleased/impressed to see how many troops managed to die in glorious battle before flags were capped though. Between us we managed to put a confirmed 1048 soldiers to the sword, with only 74 missing and presumed killed in action. Grats IW for defeating the superior roster.

Thanks Tasa buddies for accepting a roster in my absence, and thanks NA + EU mercs for applying. 28 vs 33 Mercs might be one of the best rosters I've seen in EU for a while.

Next time there'll be gear, and hopefully next time you'll see my legendary leadership in the field.

Diplomacy / Dear King Reinhardt - EU Expeditionary Force
« on: July 25, 2018, 10:34:43 PM »
Hail Reinhardt - wise, powerful and wise King of Acre.

I come bearing a proposal from the mighty King Taser - Lord of Veluca, King of the Tasa Clan, He who is on a Stick, Butcher of Acr.

Though I bear the seal of Taser, may I add that I have had the privilege of black in spanishtiating and/or engaging in diplomacy with 3 prior Kings of Acre in years gone past. In my diplomatic efforts with each of your forebears, I have been impressed without fail by the great productivity of interactions with your fine Kingdom. With that in mind, I bring with me a proposal for a joint endeavour between our kingdoms, to improve bilateral relations (whilst we remain extremely at war), and for our mutual benefit.

I will allow the clear benefits of this arrangement to speak for themself:

The Mission
Clan Taser is dispatching me to the land of EU on an expedition, to reap the riches of that land and return laden with gold and spices the likes of which you've never tasted before!

Whilst Clan Taser is willing and able to embark on this expedition alone, we wish to extend an offer for cooperation in this matter in a land where old rivalries need not exist. The deal we wish to extend is below, I'm sure you will find it more than generous.

The Terms:
- The Kingdom of Acre provides James to embark on this expedition with me.
- For the duration of the expedition James will be placed under my command as expedition leader to use as I will.
- James is fully equipped with a minimum of 1,200 men at the time of his departure.
- James is sufficiently geared to be visibly "Shiny" on the map at the time of his departure.
- The expedition will continue until sufficient plunder has been made, as deemed by the expedition leader, and an end is declared to our endeavour.
- The Kingdom of Acre will receive a generous 40% share of any silver gained from the expedition!

Mighty Reinhardt, you are known to be a great ruler of the Kingdom of Acre. In your days under your rule I have seen Acre launch an aggressive campaign to capture a city against an enemy faction, a sight I never believed I would see. I am sure your wisdom will see the clear benefit of my venture: Acre supplies the troops, Acre supplies the gear, Taser Clan supplies 40% of any profits made. However, as a token of our goodwill and a sign of respect to your Great person, I am willing to sweeten the deal.

How you will benefit:
- A massive 40% cut of all silver gained during the expedition!
- An honourary title - "Baron of the Coal Shoulder of Calradia", granted to your majesty on completion of the expedition!
- A forum scrap-book of all the fun times and adventures James and I embark on during our travels! Maybe we find a shipwreck? Maybe we fight a Mummy?
- Whilst this investment offers you no strategic value of any kind, might it influence your decision to know that James really really doesn't want to go on this expedition? And that as his King you may force him to go anyway? James has already confirmed he will respect the King's decision, we'd be like the original Odd Couple!

I know what you're thinking, this offer sounds too good to be true. Well don't just take my word for it! Read the testimonials below:

Wow Heskey, sounds like a great deal!

Racisdt, hé, look first at yourselfs before you you trow a stone, fucking morons.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly to conclude our negotiations, and I propose a toast to the fine deal we shall make and to yet another happy customer.

Respectfully,
Heskey
On behalf of Taser Clan & the EU Expeditionary Force

Strategus General Discussion / Max Roster sizes in Strat
« on: January 17, 2018, 05:51:20 PM »
Cba to find the thread that mentions when or why the max roster size was increased from 51, so writing this here. It was a ballsy move to increase roster size when pop was so low and fragile, but I think it paid off over the December period. A game that should by all-rights be fully dead and buried was able to have Strategus battles bigger than ever before. Awesome.

Even with some roster problems, at least in EU the biggest and best battles have still had over 54 mercs a side.

But my questions are:
1. Does anyone know why it was changed? For the record, I think it's been great, but it seemed counter-intuitive/ballsy to raise it given the circumstances at the time.
2. Do people think next Strategus should remain with these higher max roster size? Or should it be reduced again?

For the second question, I'm really asking for a couple of reasons. Higher max rosters have the potential to create even less balanced rosters, but so far I havent seen this actually happen - can't rule it out though since we're in a lovey-dovey phase of Strategus right now.

I have seen some commanders complain about the quality of mercs or their ability to follow instructions as a result of desperation to accept every possible merc. If interest remains the same or grows when we reset Strategus, would commanders prefer smaller max rosters in order to be more selective about who they accept?

Thoughts? Opinions? I'm not going to do a poll for the second question cos plebs don't deserve to vote, most interested in what the commanders who organise battles and lead them think.

Was fun,

Didn't notice but since revival I've been burning gold on upkeep. A LOT. Ran out of my sweet 40k gold and now everything's brokey.

See you when Strat resets!

General Off Topic / Catalonia Referendum
« on: October 01, 2017, 04:46:42 PM »
I've been following this for a while and have been consistently surprised by the lack of international news coverage.

Interested to know what everyone's thoughts are. I know based on common interests a lot of people here are nationalists, so where does that leave you on the subject of sub-national independence movements and religionalization? There's a lot of it going around with Scotland's push a few years back, the Iraqi Kurdish vote the other week and some recent noises in that direction in Cameroon.

I know some Scottish people were all about getting out from under the UK's thumb, and there was a similar ideology in place driving Brexit from Europe (though that was at a national level). But on both occasions the nation/group involved were given the freedom to vote and choose, how very progressive. That's a luxury that Catalonia hasn't been given.

For me, I'm all for it. At times like this the narrative that "these are Spain's pre-ordained borders that were always meant to be and should remain forever" immediately slips, it's more a case that at one point in history there was a unification between your territory and your neighbours and ever since then you're forcibly kept a part of that larger whole through violent force.

That said, even with a 'yes' vote the electoral process has been so fucked around by police raids that it will be hard to claim legitimacy. And even if they could, Spain could simply ignore the outcome like Iraq has done with the Kurdish referendum. It's hard to see a scenario where Catalonia actually takes their independence without somehow doing so by force. For all our democratic values etc, the world really hasn't changed that much in the last 1000 years has it?

I got weirdly addicted to these videos last week, short and interesting to watch when you've got a couple of minutes.

The guy doesn't speak, but if you press the 'CC' subtitles/captions icon on Youtube there are some annotations.

There are a couple of moments in the vids that take me out of the moment in terms of the skills only being viable because of the country/climate he lives in. Like "grab a massive palm branch like you're bound to have lying around" or "you'll never go hungry in the wild, thanks to these calorific black beans that grow all the year round".

Anyone else got some good shit like this to watch?

Did he... did he get Scaramucci fired?

"How White House officials were 'fooled by email prankster'"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40788080

TLDR - amongst other stuff this guy sent emails to Scaramucci pretending to be from Priebus, being an ass, just prior to Scaramucci's phone rant with a journalist about him.

Disclaimer - I'm not impartial but I love stuff like this regardless of what party/country it's against. It is funnier that it's top officials in the most powerful country in the world.

I have a healthy respect for people doing more with less, and this looked like a potentially very low-tech trick to play. Good old-fashioned phishing, but actual competent tailored phishing which is much more fun than 'No Joke! You win big! Please to endter details'.

Be smart online folks. This concludes our PSA.

What have I been playing at recently not drinking much? Putting my health at risk clearly.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-40740247

Quote
The researchers concluded that drinking moderately three to four times a week reduced a woman's risk of diabetes by 32% while it lowered a man's by 27%, compared with people drinking on less than one day a week.

Quote
When it came to drinking beer, men having one to six beers a week lowered their risk of diabetes by 21%, compared to men who drank less than one beer a week - but there was no impact on women's risk.

Quote
Meanwhile, a high intake of spirits among women seemed to significantly increase their risk of diabetes - but there was no effect in men.

In summary:
- Drink more red wine, good for all but especially if you woman.
- Drink at least six beers a week over multiple sessions, but only if you're certain you're a man.
- Put down the spirits if you suspect you might identify as a woman
- Spirits can be enjoyed as part of a healthy well-balanced drinking schedule if you're a man, just don't use it as an excuse to drink less wine or beer

General Discussion / Wipe - yay or nay (poll)
« on: June 13, 2017, 03:09:00 PM »
Simple question:
Would you be in favour of wiping looms, levels, gold etc as part of the spirit of a cRPG revival?

I appreciate that there are some softer 'grey' options in the middle that some people on the forum have already discussed - like some merit for the people who were high level or decked out in looms prior to any wipe, but I've kept this a simple yes/no question to try and gauge broad opinion.

Before anyone gets angry or defensive the current thought in Discord seems to be that the majority do not want a wipe. I'm only creating this thread because I'm not sure that's necessarily representing the view of this forum as initially I saw lots of people in favour of wipe but some very strongly opposed.

Want to gather as many opinions as possible of current players, returning players, potential returning players and even new players if any are present. If you feel particularly strongly one way or the other, please do make your case.

To be completely open, right now from more recent conversations it looks like a wipe would be fairly unlikely. Just based on the way key folk are talking in Discord.
